New Recruit Tryouts Begin August 30

Learn how to play roller derby and develop skills, friendships, fitness, and a healthy addiction to a transformative sport!

Tired of sitting in the stands? Want to get in on the action? Looking for an exciting way to make friends and stay in shape?
Cape Fear Roller Girls are seeking new recruits!

CFRG welcomes competitive women from all walks of life who can dedicate the time and energy it takes to become a roller derby skater. You must be at least 18 years old to play roller derby.

It certainly helps if you are already athletic or have skating experience, but it is not required. All you need is a positive attitude, an open mind, and the willingness to work your butt off, skate hard, and learn.

Tryouts will be held twice a year with detailed times and locations announced on our official “Cape Fear Roller Girls” Facebook page. Equipment is available to borrow if you do not have your own for tryouts.

If you pass tryouts, you will enter into our CFRG New Recruit Bootcamp where you will learn the skills necessary to become a Cape Fear Roller Girl. New Recruit camp is 10-weeks of New Recuit practices (one night a week) where you are taught the basic skills, knowledge, and drills of derby. There are additional attendance requirements for official CFRG events, ref shadowing, and learning a Non-Skating Official (NSO) position all to build you into a well-rounded member of our league.

Time Breakdown of what you will learn in New Recruit Camp

  1. Learn to skate better 50%
  2. Derby Drills, Rules and Footwork 90%
  3. Build Skating Endurance 60%

New Recruit camp costs $100. You have the option of 2 $50 payments or you can pay $90 at the first official New Recruit practice and save a little money for all your new awesome derby attire!

If you don’t pass tryouts or assessments during your first round, you are always invited back to try again. Don’t get discouraged. Roller derby is a complex sport with requirements that take a while to learn. Keep a great attitude and never stop working!

If you want to be part of the Cape Fear Roller Girls but…
A.) do not identify as female ~OR~
B.) aren’t sure if you like the idea of getting knocked around;
come to tryouts to show us you can skate and find out about joining our fantastic referee crew!

      Hi Liz,
Boot camp and team practices (outside of tryouts night) are private and closed to public spectators, but if you want to see what derby is like, we encourage you to come to our game this weekend! You can ask us all the questions and learn more. Many of our new recruits will be there as well so you can get their thoughts on how the program is going. We are all super happy to talk derby! If you are unsure of whether the new recruit program will be something you are interested in, you might want to come to our meet and greet in July. Anytime if you have questions, you can always email us at or post questions on our Facebook page. Oh- we are ALWAYS accepting people who want to learn how to be a NSO (non-skate official). We train you! By coming to NSO nights you help us at our scrimmages and during games. It’s an easy way to witness derby from the inside, get to know the girls and to see if it’s something you want to try! We are always in need of Refs an NSO’s so this would be a great option. We hope to meet you soon!

Got something to say?
