Maulibu Barbie – Featured Skater of the Month

Ever wonder what your favorite roller girls are like in real life? The Cape Fear Roller Girls are women from all walks of life who are united by our passion for roller derby. In our monthly series, we pull back the curtain to show you what CFRG’s skaters do when we’re not on skates.

Our featured skater for the month of October is #59, Maulibu Barbie.

  • On the Track

Maulibu Barbie passed her assessments less than a year ago and just finished her rookie season with the Cape Fear Roller Girls’ Black Harrts. She’s one of the smallest blockers on the team.

  • For the League

During the 2017 season, Barbie was a member of the Marketing Committee, where she worked to promote bouts and keep up CFRG’s web presence. For the upcoming season, she will serve on the Board of Directors as Treasurer.

  • Off the Track

She’s not just tough on the track–Barbie is also a middle school teacher! She teaches 7th grade Language Arts and Social Studies right here in Wilmington. Teaching history is her passion, and she hopes to someday earn a graduate degree in history.

  • At Home

While she doesn’t have any human children, Barbie has an apartment full of fur babies. She has two dogs, a beagle and a pitbull who keeps her on her toes. Plus, she has two adventurous little guinea pigs named Lewis and Clark.

Besides roller derby, Barbie enjoys reading historical biographies, baking, and other nerdy hobbies. When she has a rare free moment, she also likes playing video games.

  • Why She Skates

After graduating college and starting a career, Barbie was looking for a new hobby and decided to give roller derby a shot. Despite not knowing how to skate, she went to tryouts and entered the new recruit program, where she fell in love with roller derby. Her favorite things about derby are the people and being able to challenge herself in new ways.
