About Us

Who are the Cape Fear Roller Girls and where the heck did we come from?

Cape Fear Roller Girls is a group of students, teachers, mothers, wives, daughters, and professionals who all have a need for speed, competitive and compassionate hearts, and the ability to kick some major ass.  Cape Fear Roller Girls began it’s formation in 2005 when a few local ladies heard about the revival of roller derby, and felt that Wilmington, NC would be a great place to start a league.  What began as a few nights a week of banging around at Scooter’s Skating Rink with shower caps fashioned to resemble the traditional “helmet panty” has morphed into something we used to only dream about.  Gaining inspiration from our “big sisters” the Carolina Roller Girls, we have grown from a small group of dedicated women into a strong league of 30+ skaters, with many volunteers and devoted supporters, and we are still growing!

We started off as an LLC that became incorporated in 2007.  We are currently in transition and are classified as a 501c3, State of NC Non-Profit, and hope to be a Federal Non-Profit soon.  Our goal is to maintain a league “for the skaters-by the skaters” and give back to our local community while we are having fun competing with other derby leagues.  At every bout, we donate a portion of our proceed to a local charities and have done benefits for Habitat for Humanity, NHRMC Pink Ribbon Foundation, Toys for Tots, and the Cape Fear River Watch, just to name a few.

We were accepted to the WFTDA apprentice program in the summer of 2010, and hope to complete our apprenticeship and be accepted into WFTDA as a full member in 2011.   WFTDA is the international governing body for the sport of women’s flat track derby.  Flat track derby happens to be the fastest growing sport in the country right now!   WFTDA also established and maintains the rules and provides a membership organization for leagues to network and collaborate together, so it is a very exciting time for us to be working on our apprenticeship which will allow us to be nationally challengeable.

We currently have two teams, our Cape Fear Roller Girls Black Harrts and the Cape Fear Roller Girls all-stars.  We play our games at the Carolina Beach Rec Center and at the CFCC Schwartz Center in beautiful downtown Wilmington. We have a very exciting season planned for 2011, so be sure to check our website often for updates, scores, photos, and WFTDA status updates.

We hope to see you at a game or practice really soon!
