Learn the Basics of Flat Track Roller Derby
Who are the Cape Fear Roller Girls?
The Cape Fear Roller Girls are Wilmington’s premier women’s flat track derby league. The league is made up of strong, independent women of all ages and from all walks of life. Established in 2005 with a few members, Cape Fear Roller Girls worked diligently and became Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) members in June 2010, and now boasts a league of 30+ members! The Cape Fear Roller Girls pride themselves on being a league “for the skaters-by the skaters”, being a skater owned and operated non-profit organization. CFRG is dedicated to the development of amateur athletes, encouraging the physical, mental and emotional training needed while respecting and valuing the individual strengths each member contributes. All of our skaters are dedicated to community development, and are actively involved in improving the areas we live.
Our skaters and volunteers are unflagging in their efforts on and off the track to develop and maintain a positive, supportive league and community, lending both money and time to other non-profits. We are proud to represent Wilmington, at home and on the road, competing in this remarkable sport.
What is Derby?
Roller derby is the world's fastest-growing sport, because there's no other like it in the world. The Cape Fear Roller Girls are also active members of our local community. The league annually participates in many community events including, but not limited to the Azalea Festival, Island of Lights, and Front Street Brewery’s Mugs for Jugs Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser. We have made it our mission to help enrich the local community by donating our time and resources to local charitable organizations. Some of our past recipients include (click each for more info):Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity
Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing ministry assisting families in the Cape Fear Region towards the purchase of a Habitat home. How do we do that? By building quality homes that we sell at no profit to families in need. As a private, non-profit organization, our interest-free mortgages allow a wider range of lower income families to qualify for homeownership. We work closely with volunteers, sponsors and families in the Habitat for Humanity program to not only construct homes, but to build better lives.Website
